Walter Payton impressed me when I read a biography about him. His nickame was “sweetness”. I am not at all by any means a football fan, but during my married life I watched some football with my husband. Walter Payton is one of my husband’s favorite football heroes. And when I read his story I felt like I knew him and appreciated getting to gain knowledge about him.

His favorite quote was “When you’re good at something, you’ll tell everyone. When you’re great at something, they’ll tell you.” That is something to think about. It sounds like he was a humble man. He was a running back for the Chicago Bears. I admit I don’t know what a running back is – so he is on the offensive team and he is the one that receives the ball from the quarterback to run, to block and to catch the ball. There are usually two running backs on the field. He said to be the best running back in the league. Or at least he dominated in his time.
His parents were Peter and Alyne Payton and he was born in Columbia, Mississippi on July 25, 1953 and died in Barrington, Illinois on November 1, 1999 from bile duct cancer (a rare liver disease). Only 46 years old. He had 1 son, who also played football. He won the man of the year award in 1977 and when he passed the Award was renamed the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 1999. What an accomplishment!
